Can’t see the Forest for the Trees?
This case study details real time 3D mapping and localization to build a rapid model of a wooded area below thick tree canopy at a heavily wooded area to locate buried ordnance.
GPS-denied and difficult to traverse with its rugged ravine, dense flora and a humid climate, the site makes it very difficult to use stationary lidar and subsequently combine data from multiple scans, or to drag a mobile mapping cart through such an unforgiving area.
CH2M, the world-renowned design, engineering and program management firm with expertise in infrastructure and government service sector, asked Kaarta to participate in a field demonstration. The site was surveyed to provide geo-registered points for use in mapping and Ground Control Points to determine the accuracy of mapping for survey applications.
In this talk we will demonstrate how the engineers were able to collect and synchronize data to produce a complete and accurate 3D map within an accuracy of 3.5 cm – 19.8 cm in just 30 minutes.
