From Train to Bus, Mobile LiDAR Applications in Public Transit
For the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), mobile mapping has made a significant impact. The Maverick mobile mapping system collected LiDAR, imagery, and GPS for MTS’s 106 miles of track in 2013 and again in 2016. Data emerging from the Maverick provided MTS with an accurate GIS inventory of all trackside assets, allowing them to monitor track condition, inventory assets, and train new employees.
Recently, the same Maverick that collected the rail routes returned to San Diego to collect 100 fixed routes managed by the Bus Division. Since collecting two full cycles for the Light Rail division, other divisions at MTS have seen the value in mobile LiDAR and 360 imagery and realized how they might utilize it for their own applications. The challenges of data collection on public transportation routes will be addressed, along with Mandli’s solution and final results.
