Geoff Jacobs is widely considered one of the pioneers, market makers, and industry leaders in the field of laser scanning. In 1998, he joined laser scanning products startup Cyra Technologies as employee #20, the company’s first marketing executive. Geoff was instrumental in the company’s early success and in assisting with Leica Geosystems’ due diligence process for acquiring Cyra in 2001. After the acquisition, Geoff continued in senior marketing roles with Leica’s laser scanning products business until his recent retirement from Leica in January 2017. While at Leica, Geoff authored more than 40 educational articles on laser scanning for the “3D Scanning” column in Professional Surveyor magazine (now called xyHt magazine). Geoff also started and ran the Leica Geosystems HDS Worldwide User Conference, which later became the HDS/Laser Scanning track of the annual Hexagon conference. Prior to his 18-year career in laser scanning, Geoff worked as a senior marketing executive for Trimble from 1990-1998, helping to successfully commercialize another surveying technology in its early days – GPS. Today Geoff is currently a contributing editor to xyHt magazine, authoring the “GeoDude on rich data” column, and an industry marketing consultant on laser scanning-related topics. Geoff holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Penn State.
