Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, the digitization of workspaces was a goal for many AEC companies – something that they were working towards as their processes and workflows were adjusted to incorporate new technologies. The need for distancing, and the trend towards requiring fewer and fewer employees onsite have accelerated those goals for many. USIBD, (U.S. Institute of Building Documentation) has released guidance to assist in the transition from shelter-in-place orders to returning to work.

The document lists the benefits of the virtualization of jobsites, stressing the continuity of work and keeping jobs on schedule. One of the more simple, but powerful ideas put forth is the possibility of doing an “on-demand” walkthrough with stakeholders with the aid of technology.

In an accompanying post on USIBD’s website, the organization urged the industry to take on the task of visualization, taking advantage of the unoccupied or partially occupied project worksites

“Virtualize your jobsites. Your jobsites are empty now as we self-isolate. Take this opportunity to document your sites, allow your service providers access to your jobsites to document them.”
