Road scanning tools have significantly improved in the last 20 years with the introduction of advanced technologies like Lasers, Lidars, Accelerometers, and Stereo-Vision. These instruments allowed to speed-up the measuring campaigns and to move from qualitative to quantitative evaluation. Nevertheless, the cost of road mapping is still high, limiting the updates to larger organizations and making these technologies inaccessible to small companies and municipalities. The latest development in the field of autonomous driving (AD) could bring a significant revolution in connection with the developments of vehicle to infrastructure communication (V2I). This presentation will introduce these concepts showing state-of-the-art sensors for AD and how this revolution is already making advanced mapping tools accessible to road stakeholders.
