The Calibry will 3D scan medium to large objects at a low cost

The Calibry is Thord3D’s newest low-cost hand-held 3D scanner meant to capture medium and large objects. It’s ideal for engineers, doctors, designers, universities, museums, artists, and more.

Founded in 2015, the Russian-based expert in 3D imaging and complex data processing has released two 3D scanners in the past, the Thor3D (now discontinued) and Drake 3D, which “is a portable, wireless 3D scanner that can capture almost any object, large or small.” The Calibry is not only a new scanner but also a completely new brand, meant to reflect a pivot toward lower cost, and a strategy targeting the B2C market and small/medium businesses.

While the Thor3D used off-the-shelf cameras, the Calibry uses a proprietary camera which that both lowers the price tag and improves performance. It is capable of scanning up to 3M points per second, at 30 Frames Per Second (FPS), with an accuracy up to 0.1mm, and resolution up to 0.3mm. The vendors say it can handle any kind of object, including those with sharp edges, black & shiny objects, as well as fur & hair.

“We named the scanner Calibry because the device is small and fast like a hummingbird which is also known as Colibri. We also intentionally called it ‘cAlibry’ instead of ‘cOlibri’, because it echoes the word ‘calibrated’, meaning precise and accurate”, said Anna Zevelyov, CEO of Thor3D. “I am confident that this device will be very popular with engineers, medical practitioners and educators because it is affordable, easy to use and can scan objects that were difficult to scan before.”

Additionally, contrary to companies who use silicon molding for the casing of the scanner, Thor3D used injection molding, which, as stated by the company, drastically lowered “the “per unit” cost and provides for a professional look and feel of the device.” The scanner features a built-in touchscreen to visualize the scanned object, a built-in texture camera (2.3MP), 3 tracking modes (by geometry, texture or markers), and it comes with unlimited licenses of Thor3D’s “simple, yet powerful software”. Moreover, compared to Drake 3D’s 2.3kg weight, the Calibry might feel like a toy, weighing only 700g.

Priced at $5,790, the Calibry is now available for purchase, with shipment starting in June 3rd, 2019. Since Thor3D has a two-week-money-back guarantee policy, you can’t go wrong with this one!
